All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without benefit of experience.

Henry Valentine Miller was an American writer, best known for breaking with existing literary forms, developing a new sort of semi-autobiographical novel that blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association and mysticism. His most characteristic works are 'Tropic of Cancer', 'Black Spring', 'Tropic of Capricorn' and 'The Rosy Crucifixion', all of which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris. He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors.
